Allegheny County Jail Roster Overview
Here is the key fact to know first. Allegheny County does not publish a verified public online inmate roster. The official jail pages do not offer a name-search box that returns a live list of who is in custody. So an inmate search is not a one-click web lookup. It is a phone-based request, and the jail confirms custody and booking details when you call.
The jail itself is the Allegheny County Jail, known as ACJ. It sits in downtown Pittsburgh and holds people committed by the courts. To check on someone, you call the jail or a related office and give the person's name. Booking date, pod, and release or transfer status are all handled this way. The county also runs an FAQ that spells out which line to call for which question.
The county jail page gives a broad overview of the facility, its history, and current operations.
You can read the Allegheny County Jail page for the official facility overview. It confirms the jail's downtown location and explains that the courts commit individuals to ACJ and to two alternative housing sites.
One more point on scope. A county jail roster does not cover everyone. People sentenced to state time are held by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, not the county. People charged with federal crimes go into the federal Bureau of Prisons system. So if the county jail has no record, the person may sit in a state prison or a federal facility, and you would use a different locator for each. More on those below.
How to Find an Allegheny County Inmate
Because there is no online roster, the search runs by phone. The jail FAQ explains where each kind of question goes. Pick the line that matches what you need, then have the person's full name ready. A date of birth helps too.
The jail FAQ lays out these phone routes in detail.
You can review the jail inmate FAQ for the official answers. It tells callers exactly which number to use for booking dates, pod information, and release status.
Follow these steps to confirm custody or find an inmate.
- Call the main jail line at 412-350-2000 with the person's full name to confirm custody.
- For a booking date, call the jail or Arraignment Court at 412-350-3240.
- For pod or housing-unit information, call the jail at 412-350-2000.
- For release or transfer status, call the jail at 412-350-2000; the answer depends on whether the person was released or moved.
- For records on someone no longer held, former inmates may call the Records Office at 412-350-2635.
If the person is not in the county jail, move to the state or federal locator. A name that returns nothing at the county level often turns up in the Pennsylvania DOC system or the federal BOP system.
Inmate Search Fields and Routes
Since the lookup is request-based, the "fields" are really the pieces of information the jail asks for, and the route each request takes. The table below lists what you can ask about and how that request is handled. None of this is an online form. It is a phone or records request.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official online roster | n/a | n/a | No verified public online roster was found on the county jail pages. |
| Name | Phone / request detail | Optional | Call the jail or Records Office; give the full name if known. |
| DOC number | Phone / request detail | Optional but useful | Needed for visitor check-in; lobby staff do not disclose it to visitors. |
| Booking date | Phone / request detail | Optional | Call the jail or Arraignment Court at 412-350-3240. |
| Pod / housing | Phone / request detail | Restricted | Call the jail at 412-350-2000; lobby staff do not share visitor-list names. |
| Release / transfer status | Phone / request detail | Conditional | Call 412-350-2000; the answer turns on whether the person left or moved. |
| Request route | Phone / RTKL / Records Office | Conditional | Some jail records may run through the Records Office or county open-records process. |
So the search starts with a name and a phone call. The more identifiers you bring, the faster staff can confirm a match.
What an Inmate Record Shows
There is no online profile page to click through. Still, when you call, certain facts are available and others are not. Some details are public; some are held back. Medical information, for one, is not released to outside parties because of HIPAA. The table below shows the fields a request can surface and what each one means.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Booking Date | When the person was booked into the jail; confirmed by the jail or Arraignment Court. |
| Pod / Housing | The housing unit where the person is held; obtained by calling the jail. |
| DOC Number | The jail's internal ID for the person; needed for visits but not given to visitors by lobby staff. |
| Release / Transfer Status | Whether the person was released or moved, and where, depending on status. |
| Trust Account Funds | Money held for the person; deposits and outgoing payments follow set rules. |
| Medical Information | Not released to outside parties; protected under HIPAA. |
For mental-health or suicide concerns about a person in custody, the jail keeps dedicated lines: call 412-350-2066 or 412-350-2176.
Allegheny County Jail Facility
ACJ is a high-rise, direct-supervision jail in downtown Pittsburgh. It opened in 1995. The facility has capacity over 3,000, though the average daily population has stayed below 2,000 for the past few years. Warden Trevor Wingard runs the jail. Court-committed individuals are held at ACJ or at two alternative housing sites. The old jail, by the way, was converted into the combined home of the juvenile and family sections of the Court of Common Pleas.

The two alternative housing programs, Renewal and Passages to Recovery, hold some court-committed people instead of the main jail. So a person you cannot reach at ACJ may be placed at one of those sites.
Booking and Release Process in Allegheny County
When the courts commit a person, they are housed at ACJ or at alternative housing. Bail Services conducts initial investigations at the jail and presents bail matters to the court. Arraignment Court can confirm a booking date. At admission, any funds the person carries are placed into an incarcerated individual trust account.
The trust account has rules. Within 10 days of booking, the person can send funds from the account to family, an attorney, or to pay bond. After 10 days, outgoing funds can only go to an attorney or toward bond. On release, the balance comes back. A balance of $50 or less is paid in cash. A balance over $50 is paid as $50 cash plus a check for the rest. Releases after 5:30 p.m. with more than $500 require the person to return the next business day for the remaining balance.
The Inmate Funds page covers the trust account and these release-money rules in full.
See the official Inmate Funds page for deposit methods, hold periods, and the cash-versus-check release rules. The Cashier's Office handles these transactions on a set weekday and Saturday schedule.
Deposits to a trust account can come through lobby kiosks, money orders, ConnectNetwork, or a Jail ATM. As of November 1, 2024, anyone depositing money must be on the person's approved visitor list. Money orders totaling over $100 are held for 10 business days.
Visitation Hours and Rules
Visits at ACJ are contactless. Before you can visit, you must register as an approved visitor by calling 412-350-2413, 412-350-2035, or 412-350-2036, or by going to the jail lobby. Once approved, you schedule social visits online, at least two days ahead. Check in at the visit lobby at least 15 minutes early. Visits can change or get canceled due to movement, lockdown, or emergencies. The table below shows the daily social-visit blocks.

At check-in, visitors trade a photo ID for a visitor pass and need the person's DOC number. Lobby staff cannot give out that number or the names on a visiting list. If a pass is not returned or comes back damaged, visiting privileges are suspended. For a deeper look at visit rules and the housing-unit schedule, see the population page, which links the official visitation details.
Mail and How to Contact an Inmate
Mail at ACJ follows strict rules. Address letters to the inmate's name, DOC number, Allegheny County Jail, 950 Second Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Use blue or black ink, or pencil. No stickers, stains, glitter, lipstick, or perfume. Everything is photocopied, so originals are never delivered. Letters cannot run more than three pages and must be no larger than 8.5 by 11 inches, front and back. Mail that breaks the rules is destroyed.
Photos are delivered as color copies, one 4 by 6 copy per envelope. No nudity, explicit content, gang pictures, or hand signals. Each photo must carry the inmate's name and DOC number on the back. Books, magazines, and newspapers must come straight from a publisher by USPS, UPS, or FedEx. Family or friends can order soft-cover books only, and only from Barnes & Noble or Christianbook.
State and Federal Inmate Locators
If the county jail has no record, the person may be in a state prison or a federal facility. Pennsylvania runs a state inmate locator for people held by the Department of Corrections. It searches by name or inmate number and returns state prison and parolee status, not county-jail detainees.
The Pennsylvania DOC locator is the official state tool.
Search the Pennsylvania DOC locator for state custody and parole status. Enter a name or DOC number; the inmate number is the best identifier when you have it.
For people in federal custody, the Bureau of Prisons runs its own locator. It searches by BOP register number or by name with race, age, and sex filters.
The federal BOP inmate locator covers people held in federal facilities. Note that release dates may not be current, and "Released" can still mean custody by another system.
Victims and concerned parties can also track custody status through SAVIN, Pennsylvania's free victim notification system, on the VINELink platform. It sends alerts on release, transfer, or escape for people held in a county jail or state prison.
Register on VINELink to get custody-status notifications. Select Pennsylvania, search for the person, then sign up for phone, email, or text alerts.
